Partners & Outreach

We couldn’t get from here to there without our partners. Schools, businesses, and public agencies help underwrite the journey for our students.

INDUSTRY PARTNERS IN EDUCATION

Trash Tracks:  Students Map Litter to Keep Louisiana Beautiful

“The Life of Litter” is a student project from GGI that teaches grades 3–8 to map community litter using Esri’s ArcGIS Online. Aligned with Keep Louisiana Beautiful, the program builds environmental awareness and civic responsibility. Funded by the Gulf Research Program of the National Academies, it is one of 12 place-based education initiatives in the Gulf region sharing $5.1 million in support for K–8 learning. Acadian Middle School - STEM Career Day

Justin Arceneaux, founder of the Little Discipline Enrichment Program, invited GGI and industry partner Fenstermaker to Acadian Middle’s STEM Career Day. GGI introduced students to flying drones, while Fenstermaker’s team, led by Coy LeBlanc, demonstrated how professional pilots use drones to solve real-world problems in the field. [Event Video]

City of Hammond : High school student uses GIS to map crime

Chief of Police for the City Hammond mentored Hammond High School youth to answer the question;  what was the effect of Hurricane Katrina on Crime in Hammond?  The results were focused on burglary and theft.  Crime rates were altered by population changes, and this map project uses GIS technology together and analyzes new data trends before and after Hurricane Katrina.  Click on view projects below to learn more.

Park Forest Middle School hosts Maps and Apps summer camp

Middle school students were introduced to GIS technology over one week in Maps and Apps for Youth, a summer GIS program where fifteen students learned and applied GIS skills using the Collector for ArcGIS app.  Project Based Learning led by a junior camp counselor taught students about the science and use of GIS behind the urban heat island project.  Click on view projects below to learn more.

City of Baton Rouge

This project analyses hydrological, land use, and land cover (LULC) data to develop a geospatial model proposing sites for the construction of greenways in an urban environment.  The project builds an understanding of the relationship between built and non-built environments, and how human activity impacts these lands.  Click on view projects below to learn more.

Parish Proud: Fenstermaker and City of Lafayette

GGI partnered with Lafayette's C.H. Fenstermaker to embark on a student Geographic Information System trained students to collect litter data, as participants in Lafayette Parish Proud Litter Project.  Holding to its mission, GGI, with Fenstermaker, taught high school students to be Citizen Scientists. LOUISIANA GEOGRAPHIC EDUCATORS ALLIANCE (LAGEA)

GGI helps Louisiana educators bring geographic concepts and skills into the classroom. We offer 4-hour workshops, taught by GISP-certified instructors, tailored to different teaching styles and settings. Held each spring and winter, these sessions have reached more than 35 school districts, with hundreds of teachers earning CEUs through our professional development programs.

MIGHTY MAPS INSTITUTE

A core foundational professional development service to teach educators how to utilize the ArcGIS technology platform. GGI provides coaching, materials and resources to educators on a district-wide level to reach critical mass. Our programs and services are designed for K-12 students and educators beginning with teacher PD and lesson plans for 3rd graders.

MIDDLE SCHOOLS

High school programs are most effective when students are introduced to GIS earlier. Middle school is the ideal time to build a strong foundation, integrating GIS across subjects to develop critical thinking, project-based learning, service learning, and the multidisciplinary skills that spatial thinking provides.

HIGH SCHOOLS

GGI brings GIS and Remote Sensing into Louisiana schools, showing students how these tools apply in the real world. We’ve partnered with 42 school districts, reaching students, teachers, and educators across the state. Highlights include high school career nights—like Lamar Dixon in 2017, where more than 1,000 students learned about GIS certifications—and STEM Day at River Parishes Community College, where 54 Girl Scouts explored hands-on STEM activities. At Dutchtown High and River Parishes, students have learned to fly drones and collect field data using Collector for ArcGIS. We look forward to continuing our partnerships in Ascension Parish and beyond. [More]

JUMPSTART

Jumpstart is an innovative career and technical education (CTE) program in Louisiana that teaches students academic content and workplace “soft skills” so that they can earn certifications in high-wage/high-demand career sectors while in high school. With the goal of pursuing future education (in 2- and 4- year colleges) and securing employment, students are required to attain industry-valued credentials in order to graduate with a Career Diploma.  The BESE Board recently approved Jump Start 2.0, as part of that approval our GIS Industry-Based Certification was placed in 6 of the 11 Pathways.

INTERNSHIPS

Internships are universal courses, they apply to every Jump Start graduation pathway.  As part of our Industry Partner relationship we  are actively securing Internships in several of WIC-approved high-demand industry sectors such as Information Technology, Transportation and Logistics to name a few. These Internships are identified as Career Development Fund (CDF) Qualifying Internships according to the LA DOE Believes website.

LA WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

In June, 2017 Louisiana Workforce Development approved LARSGIS Institute, dba Global Geospatial Institute, as the certifying agency for a statewide basic Industry-Based Certification in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
